SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN WITH JAPANESE ECHOES

Karup

Attention to detail and eco-sustainability are what unites Karup’s diverse range of designer furniture.
“Ecodesign” is synonymous with a 100% sustainable and environmentally friendly design concept.
Riva has selected a wide range of furniture whose creation is the result of conscious design that uses resources efficiently.

Karup’s design was born from the perfect blend of minimalist and essential Scandinavian design and Japanese futons.
All of its creations are transformable solid wood furniture: teen rooms, guest rooms, first homes, and summer homes.
Karup uses the advantages of futons to find new, unexplored solutions.

THE HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE OF THE FUTON

The Karup brand was founded in 1972 by Preben Christensen in Denmark and to date is the most famous and important brand specializing in the production of designer futons, beds and sofa beds.
Preben Christensen, who has always been very focused on innovation, was eager to discover new ways to change the way furniture is made.

His business, which began in an old farmhouse, grew rapidly to such an extent that production was soon moved to the town of Karup in central Denmark.
When Preben in the early 1980s discovered the Hippie futon bed in America, he was completely fascinated by it and thought it should be imported to Europe as well.
So it was thanks to his intervention that the first series of futon beds appeared in Europe. All beds and sofa beds are made entirely of natural wood, thus ensuring a perfect balance between personal health culture and eco-sustainable philosophy.

FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE

Every piece of furniture must be designed to be functional.
All of Karup’s furniture captivates not only by its minimalist design and clean lines but also by its brilliant functionality andhigh adaptability to a multitude of environments.
Functionality is thus the key value of Karup design.
Futon sofas are designed to challenge the traditional sofa design: they retain their structure when used as sofas and allow them to be transformed into beds with simple gestures.
For the structure, Karup uses only solid wood.
